About The Tangerine

B. L. Moor High School

B.L. Moor High School, established in 1960, was a historically Black public secondary school located in the Pleasant Grove community near Starkville, Mississippi. It served as a consolidation of several smaller public and private African American schools, providing educational opportunities for grades K-12, even though its name suggested otherwise.  Over its 55-year history, B.L. Moor High School became a cornerstone of the local African American community, fostering academic excellence and personal growth among its students.

The school was renowned for its vibrant extracurricular activities, particularly in basketball and football. In 1967, B.L. Moor established its first football team under Coach Charles Davis. A decade later, in 1978, the team achieved an impressive 8-2 record, marking one of its most successful seasons. This period also saw the emergence of Jerry Rice, who would later become a Pro Football Hall of Famer, as a standout player.

In 2015, a state-mandated reorganization merged the Oktibbeha County School District with the Starkville School District, resulting in the closure of East Oktibbeha County High School. B.L. Moor High School’s impact remains strong, with alumni and the community working to honor its history and contributions.

In recent years, the former B.L. Moor High School campus has undergone a remarkable transformation. The main high school building has been renovated into The Hill and Moor, a premier family-owned event venue, while the middle school building has been transformed into The Tangerine Motel, a mid-century modern boutique motel. These developments have breathed new life into the historic site, ensuring that the legacy of B.L. Moor High School continues to be honored and remembered.

A collage titled "Memories" with black and white photos of Black individuals engaged in various activities, including reading, sitting in a library, participating in a race, playing music, and writing. The collage features handwritten labels such as "Queen," "Queen K," "Run," "Love," "Graduation," and "RACER."
